Alphabet Inc.'s (GOOGL.O) Google agreed to buy Looker for US$2.6 billion, expanding its offerings to help customers manage data in the cloud. It also sets up a new competitive front with Microsoft and its Power Platform/Dynamics 365 data software tools, as both companies pursue cloud deals from older companies migrating their workloads into the 21st century.

"One of the most important ways we advance Google's mission is by helping other businesses realize theirs", Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in a release.

Looker, a unified platform for business and data intelligence, is joining the Google Cloud.

The deal is another sign of the enterprise-focused approach that Kurian is trying to bring to Google, which in the past has struggled to translate its distributed-computing skills into the real-world approaches that enterprise customers really need.

"Google Cloud is being used by numerous leading organizations in the world for analytics and decision-making", Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, said in a statement. Late past year, Google replaced its head of cloud Diane Greene with longtime Oracle Corp.

"The addition of Looker to Google Cloud will help us offer customers a more complete analytics solution from ingesting data to visualizing results and integrating data and insights into their daily workflows", said Google Cloud chief Thomas Kurian.

Alphabet shares were down 0.6 percent in early trading. (ORCL.N) executive Thomas Kurian.

"The data analytics market is growing incredibly fast as companies look to leverage all of their data to make more informed decisions", said Frank Gens, Senior Vice President & Chief Analyst, IDC. The deal is expected to close later this year.

The acquisition announced Thursday gives Google a new tool in its campaign to sell more cloud storage and software.
