MPs may have run out of options to block no-deal Brexit

John Bercow

He said he believed he could get a Brexit deal through the House of Commons - something Mrs May repeatedly failed to achieve.

Speaking about those who said the United Kingdom could leave on October 31, if necessary without a deal, he added: "I think they are misleading themselves and others and that strategy is going to lead to delay".

It has previously been reported that Labor meant to push forward a deal that would allow opponents of a no deal Brexit to take control of parliament's timetable in an effort to stop a possible no deal Brexit from moving forward.

Letwin told BBC Radio 4's Today programme, "Under the Article 50 process, on 31 October the United Kingdom leaves the European Union regardless of whether we do or don't have a deal in place unless somebody does something to alter that".

Why are MPs anxious about a no-deal Brexit now?

"But this is just the start, not the end of our efforts to block no deal".

The cross-party bill was rejected by MPs by 309 votes to 298, destroying plans to prevent any brexiteer-led government from taking the United Kingdom out of the European Union without a deal.

"There will be other procedural mechanisms we can use", shadow Brexit Secretary Sir Keir Starmer said.

She told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: 'This is about that safety valve, that lock in the process, so that somebody who may find themselves elected a leader of the Tory Party on a promise of, in Dominic Raab's case, proroguing Parliament, and locking Parliament out of this process - they can't do that. "For me, the real risk of no-deal is it triggers a serious decline in our competitiveness for the long-term".

Jo Swinson, deputy leader of the Liberal Democrats and hopeful to succeed Vince Cable as leader, blasted MPs for "putting party loyalty ahead of national interest" by rejecting the bill.

Boris Johnson has launched his bid for the Tory crown with a warning to MPs they will "reap the whirlwind" if they try to thwart Brexit.

We are one step closer to no deal, which is an outcome that I think only one Labour MP prefers over leaving with a deal.

He warned that failure to deliver on the referendum result would create an "existential threat" for both Labour and the Conservatives. Had the motion been passed, it would also have had a major impact on the Conservative leadership race, wiping out the favored policy of some candidates, but as things stand, the prospect of a no-deal Brexit is now a lot more realistic.
