PM Khan to attend Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit today

PM Modi to hold first meeting of council of ministers of new govt on Wednesday

In what is being considered a snub to Pakistan, India on Wednesday decided that instead of flying straight via Pakistan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi would take a circuitous route via Oman, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan to land in Bishkek - the capital of Kyrgyzstan - and participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit.

Modi's move also suggests there is little chance of a thaw in ties even though Pakistan said it hoped to revive talks after elections in India ended in May.

PM Imran extended an invitation to the Kyrgyz President to visit Pakistan.

However, on Monday, the MEA spokesperson said no such meeting has been arranged between the two leaders.

On his meeting with the Russian President, the Prime Minister said, he had a wonderful meeting with Mr Vladimir Putin. This is Mr Modi's first multi-lateral summit after his re-election as the Prime Minister.

According to another source, a cricket World Cup advertisement by a Pakistani television channel that led to a huge outcry among the Indian fans and resulted in a social media war also played a role in arriving at the decision. He further stated that peace among India and Pakistan was entirely dependent on the issue of Kashmir.

Relations between Pakistan and India hit a nadir in the last five years with at least three major terror attacks on Indian military establishment and personnel of armed forces since 2016.

Pakistan had strongly denied the accusation, asked India for proofs and reacted robustly to Indian air strike by striking back inside Indian controlled Kashmir. The next day, Pakistan Air Force retaliated and downed a MiG-21 in an aerial combat and captured an IAF pilot, who was later handed over to India. PM said we have made efforts and these have been derailed. United States government - the supplier of F-16 planes and parts - has however verified that Pakistani stock of F-16s is complete. Though the Indian government made leaks to its media claiming killing 350 militants in Ballot, KP, but under the scrutiny of Indian media and opposition, it later retracted its earlier claims and admitted that no casualties took place during its airstrike. Islamabad also captured one of the Indian pilots but released him to defuse the impending crisis.

In July 2015 in Ufa, Russia, the SCO chose to admit India and Pakistan as full members and both the countries officially joined SCO as full members during the Astana Summit in 2017.
