Police 'Pursuing' Case Against Raptors President For Allegedly Smacking Deputy In Face

Raptors president Majai Ujiri celebrates after his team's NBA championship-clinching win over the Warriors on Thursday night

The Sheriff's Office labeled the incident battery on an officer, classified as a misdemeanor, and will be investigating with the Oakland Police Department.

A video of the altercation obtained by NBC Bay Area shows Ujiri and a deputy being held back courtside by bystanders. At that point our deputy tried to stop him and pushed him backward and then Mr. Ujiri came back with a second shove, a more significant push that, with his forward momentum, his arm struck our deputy in the face. Reports said that a man believed to be a Raptors executive pushed and struck a sheriff's deputy. Ujiri is accused of twice shoving an officer and striking him in the face after he was blocked from entering the court because he didn't display his game credential.

Ujiri eventually made his way onto the court for the celebration, but Kelly says police plan to file a complaint with local prosecutors.

Ujiri appears to be holding what may be his credential in his right hand; another video showing Ujiri waiting in the tunnel before the incident also appears to show him holding the credential, USA Today reports.

"We were told to strictly enforce the credentialing policy and not allow anyone onto the court without a credential, so our deputies were doing that", Sgt.

"Mr. Ujiri was unknown to the deputy at that time". The Alameda County District Attorney's Office said it expected to look into the matter sometime next week.

Washington stalled its search for a top basketball executive in the aftermath of Denver Nuggets president of basketball operations Tim Connelly rejecting an offer on May 20.

Ujiri, 48, is also in the hard position of needing to navigate this Wizards courtship as his franchise prepares to make its closing case to free agent Kawhi Leonard about staying with the Raptors on a long-term deal.

"We would expect more from a team president".
