President Trump says press secretary Sarah Sanders is leaving the White House

WASHINGTON DC- APRIL 04 White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders talks to reporters after talking to FOX News outside the West Wing of the White House

President Donald Trump announced via Twitter today that the woman who took over the podium from Sean Spicer in July 2017 will leave the administration at month's end.

In private conversations in recent weeks, Sanders has floated running for governor in her home state of Arkansas, according to two people familiar with the talks.

He said, "She is a very special person with extraordinary talents, who has done an incredible job!"

"We've been through a lot together and she's tough, but she's good", Trump said at the event Thursday. "Sarah, thank you for a job well done!" he continued in a second tweet. She's a patriot who worked tirelessly every day to deliver on @POTUS' America First Agenda.

"She would be fantastic", he said.

She will be leaving at the end of June, he added. In recent months, however, Sanders made herself less accessible to the press.

Her last media briefing was held on 11 March - 94 days ago.

Some on the left weren't quite so kind. "We can not let her avoid accountability for serving as the chief mouthpiece and enabler of this admin's bigoted and violent policies".

Mike Huckabee will join Fox News tonight, where he is expected to discuss his daughters' departure.

Throughout her tenure at the White House, Sanders has come under fierce criticism from members of the press for being dishonest on the president's behalf during press briefings that were often contentious and emotional.

Material from Bloomberg News and Reuters was used in this story.
