Tony Parker Retires From NBA

Dwyane Wade and Tony Parker

Tony Parker, a Hall of Fame lock from his years with the San Antonio Spurs, told The Undefeated web site on Monday that he is retiring after 18 National Basketball Association seasons.

Parker, who in 2007 became the first European to be named Most Valuable Player at an NBA Finals, spent 17 seasons with the Spurs before past year joining the Charlotte Hornets, who missed out on the playoffs with a 39-43 record. Parker made six All-Star teams as a member of the Spurs, and he helped lead the organization to four of their five championships.

In order to be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, retired players must fulfill a variety of requirements. Parker told The Undefeated that his body is still in playing shape and he could play at least two more years, but the time to hang it up seemed clear.

'You don't want to do like Dwyane and Dirk?' And I said, 'No, because it's not on the Spurs jersey.' So, for me, it's different.

Parker won four NBA championships with the Spurs and will end his career as an influential figure in not only Spurs, but European basketball history.

There was hope that Parker would play his 20th season as a Spur, but those dreams are now over. He won four NBA championships with the Spurs and was a 6-time NBA All-Star who had a storied worldwide career before he entered the NBA Draft and was taken 28th overall by the Spurs in 2001. He wanted his retirement announcement to be released Monday. "Right now, I'm focusing on ASVEL and having a great experience". "I have so much stuff going on that I've always been at peace with that decision".

Parker is at peace with his decision because it is something that he has prepared himself for. But at the same time, now I don't see any reason to play 20 seasons.

"They were like, 'Are you sure?'" Parker said.

After 16-years in the NBA, Wade announced that the 2018-2019 NBA season would be his last.

"Our guys are helping us win games right now", Borrego said on March 26 before the Hornets beat the Spurs, . And it's amusing because that whole year in Charlotte, I realized even more that what we had (in San Antonio) was very, very special.

Parker started 1,151 regular season games and averaged 15.5 points and 5.6 assists per game.

Tony Parker is walking away from basketball after 18 seasons in the NBA.
