Turkey says it has already bought Russian S-400 defense systems

Russia's Sukhoi Su-57 stealth-capable fighter

For months, Ankara has warned the USA and other North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies that it would go ahead with the $2.5 billion (Dh9b) purchase of the surface-to-air missiles, despite warnings they would be incompatible with the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation air defence umbrella.

"I'm not saying that Turkey is buying S-400 systems, I'm saying that Turkey has already bought them, and this is a done deal", Erdogan declared, adding that the Russian-made advanced missile systems "will be delivered next month".

Erdogan is scheduled to meet with President Donald Trump on the margins of Group of 20 (G20) summit in Japan on June 28-29, but the Turkish leader said he will speak to the US president by phone on June 13.

The issue has strained already tense ties between the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies.

The Pentagon announced on Friday that if Turkey did not give up on the S-400 system by July 3, Ankara would be blocked from purchasing F-35 fighter jets and Turkish pilots now training in the U.S. would be expelled.

It is unclear whether Turkey and the U.S. still plan to participate in a joint technical study group to investigate Washington's concerns over Ankara's purchase of the Russian systems. "The Turkish and USA presidents will discuss the issue of training our pilots on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Japan", he added. Nobody can give an ultimatum to Turkey, " Cavusoglu stated on Thursday, echoing President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's earlier comments that the sale was already a done deal.

The US says Turkey's acquisition of the Russian system poses a threat to Lockheed Martin Corp's F-35 stealth fighters and has warned of potential US sanctions if Ankara presses on with the deal.

"We will hold to account Turkey's exclusion from F-35 program in every platform due to reasons without reason or legitimacy", Erdogan said.

Shanahan said on Friday the U.S. offer for the Patriots was "very competitive" but Erdogan said Russian Federation offered a better deal including reasonable pricing and a joint-production promise.

Erdogan was lying about the United States refusing to sell him defense systems. "Won't we take necessary measures to defend our country?" he said.

"We are not going to request anyone's approval to satisfy our needs regarding the defense industry". Yes, we did. Did they deliver?

The Russian military said late on Wednesday that Moscow and Ankara had struck a deal for a complete cease-fire in the northwestern province of Idlib, the last stronghold of Syria's rebellion.

As well as these immediate responses, the S-400 deal threatens to undermine Turkey's role in North Atlantic Treaty Organisation - a cornerstone of its security policy since it joined in 1952.

Erdogan on June 12 said he "would like to discuss this issue by telephone and reverse it from the current situation back to where we started".

Russian Federation said on Tuesday it plans to deliver its S-400s to Turkey in July, setting the clock ticking on a United States threat to hit Ankara with sanctions if it goes ahead with the deal.
