Uber helicopter will cost you $200 in New York

Time to fly

In brief: It's still going to be a while before we see fleets of flying autonomous Uber vehicles populating the skies, but the ride-hailing giant will reportedly start offering another air-based service as soon as next month: Uber Copter.

But this isn't like UberPOOL - not everybody will be able to experience the new service.

News has surfaced of Uber's newest venture courtesy of today's New York Times - Uber Copter.

Many helicopters, including those to be used by Uber Copter, have neither the space nor the weight capacity to accommodate large bags.

Uber believes it can cut the travel time between Manhattan and JFK - typically between one and two hours, depending on mode of transit - to 30 minutes.

"Our plan is to eventually roll out Uber Copter to more Uber customers and to other cities, but we want to do it right", Allison said.

Uber said the service would help time-pressed riders save up to an hour they would otherwise spend in congested city traffic to and from JFK airport.

Uber Technologies Inc., the popular ride-sharing company, is expanding into new territory and testing the service in NYC.

Blade CEO Rob Wiesenthal told The Post he welcomed the competition, saying there was "no greater validation of Blade's strategy and No. 1 market position than Uber's entering the Urban Air Mobility market in New York City".

Is a ~$200 helicopter ride on top of whatever you're paying to fly in an airplane for everyone? In addition to booking by the seat, Blade also offers private charters and crowdsource services. Each helicopter will be capable of carrying five passengers and their belongings.

Blade's luggage allowance is even more strict - capped at one personal bag and one small carry-on per person with a 25 lb. maximum for airport rides - though a ToteTaxi service is offered for an additional fee. Blade now provides airport transports in Los Angeles and San Francisco as well. "Uber Rewards Platinum and Diamond members will win the first opportunity to do this new hasty and seamless manner to win between The the big apple and JFK".
