Uganda confirms first case of Ebola

Ebola spreads to Uganda in its first cross-border case since outbreak

The case in Uganda was a 5-year-old Congolese boy who had crossed the border to seek medical treatment, the World Health Organization and Uganda's Health Ministry said in a joint announcement Tuesday.

Aceng says Ugandan health officials were alerted of the presence of contacts of an Ebola case from DRC and their phone contacts provided for close monitoring by their counterparts across the border.

To prepare for the possibility of imported cases, Uganda has already vaccinated almost 4,700 health workers against Ebola and disease monitoring programs are in place, the WHO said. Uganda has previous experience managing Ebola outbreaks.

The outbreak has infected at least 2,062 people in Congo, and about 1,400 have died. There, a dozen family members appeared to have symptoms and were transferred to an isolation centre at the local hospital for observation.

All the other Congolese family members have since been isolated at Bwera Ebola Treatment Unit and two of them had their blood samples taken and sent to the Uganda Virus Institute (UVRI) after they too developed symptoms similar to that of Ebola.

Uganda's health ministry said the boy and his relatives, including his mother - a Congolese woman married to a Ugandan man residing in Kasese - had travelled to DRC before returning to Uganda on June 10.

The boy and his family came to Uganda from the DRC and went to Uganda's Kagando Hospital for care.

While health officials have focused on the far deadlier hemorrhagic Ebola virus concentrated in DRC's east, some 87,000 suspected cases of measles have been reported across the vast central African country in the first four and a half months of this year.

Efforts to contain the disease have been hampered by ongoing violence in the region, including attacks on health workers.

"The spread of Ebola across the worldwide border is a clear signal that the global community must reset and redouble its efforts" in fighting the disease, the worldwide Rescue Committee said in a statement calling itself "extremely alarmed".
