US blames Iran for attacks on 2 tankers near Persian Gulf

Oil Jumps From Near Five Month Low After Report Tanker on FireMore

Captain Bill Urban, a Central Command spokesman, said a Revolutionary Guard patrol ship removed the limpet mine from the Kokuka Courageous.

The United States has called for the UN Security Council to confront a "clear threat" posed by Tehran, after Washington said Iran was behind an attack on oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman.

Iran has fiercely denied the USA assertions, with its mission to the United Nations condemning what it called unfounded claims.

The video release comes hours after Secretary of State Mike Pompeo blamed Iran for the incident saying "these unprovoked attacks present a clear threat to worldwide peace and security".

Tensions in the Middle East have escalated since U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew from a 2015 multinational nuclear pact with Iran and reimposed sanctions, especially targeting Tehran's oil exports. "We will defend our interests, but a war with Iran is not in our strategic interest, nor in the best interest of the worldwide community".

Taiwan's state oil refiner CPC said the Front Altair, owned by Norway's Frontline, was "suspected of being hit by a torpedo" around 0400 GMT carrying a Taiwan-bound cargo of 75,000 tonnes of petrochemical feedstock naphtha, which Refinitiv Eikon data showed had been picked up from Ruwais in the UAE. Each was loaded with petroleum products, and the Front Altair burned for hours, a fire that charred half of one of the vessel's sides and sent up a column of thick, black smoke.

In May, the US rushed an aircraft carrier strike group and other military assets to the Persian Gulf region in response to what it said were threats from Iran.

Analysts say that tensions in the Gulf region could push prices up again in the longer term, if they are protracted and there is a real threat to the flow of supplies.

USA national security adviser John Bolton said Iranian naval mines were nearly certainly behind those attacks without providing any evidence.

Iran's U.N. Mission said its government "categorically rejects" the USA claim that it was responsible for the attacks and condemned it "in the strongest possible terms".

Tensions between the United States and Iran have been rising since President Donald Trump pulled out of Barack Obama's nuclear deal a year ago, which traded sanctions relief for certain curbs on the regime's nuclear weapons program.

At 8:09am a United States aircraft saw an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Hendijan class patrol boat and "multiple IRGC fast attack craft/fast inshore attack craft" approach in the vicinity of the Altair, Centcom said.

It was also based on recent incidents in the region, which the USA also blamed on Iran, including the use of limpet mines in the Fujairah attack, he said. U.S. officials similarly accused Iran of targeting the ships with limpet mines, which are magnetic and attach to the hulls of a ship.

Washington has dispatched the destroyer USS Mason to the scene "to provide assistance", CENTCOM said in a statement.

The fact that both vessels remained afloat suggested mines may have damaged them, Larsen said.

Tensions have escalated in the Mideast as Iran appears poised to break the 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, an accord that the Trump administration repudiated past year. The deployment came a year after Washington exited a multinational accord that lifted sanctions on Iran in exchange for curbs on its nuclear programme. It is thought implausible that an IRGC group has gone rogue, or even that Houthi rebels fighting Saudi Arabia in neighbouring Yemen were responsible.

Already, Iran says it quadrupled its production of low-enriched uranium.

Ultimate authority in Iran is wielded by Khamenei, a hard-line cleric in power since 1989, although the country is run day-to-day by Rouhani, the pragmatist president who won two landslide elections on promises to open Iran to the world. The kingdom said a similar attack Wednesday on the Abha airport wounded 26 people.
