US Helicopter pilot dies following NY crash

1 Dead As Helicopter Crashes Into New York Building

A helicopter crashed on the roof of a high-rise building in midtown Manhattan on Monday afternoon, killing one person, the New York City Fire Department said.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration's airmen records, McCormack was issued his commercial pilot license on September 24, 2004, and received his flight instructor certificate for "Rotorcraft-Helicopter" previous year on June 28, 2018.

The governor was quoted by local media as saying the helicopter appeared to have tried to make an emergency landing on the roof.

The Fire Department says the helicopter crash landed on the top of the tower, which isn't far from Rockefeller Center and Times Square.

"If you're a New Yorker, you have a level of PTSD from 9/11", Cuomo said.

The pilot who was killed when his privately-owned helicopter crashed into a skyscraper in Manhattan, on Monday afternoon, has been named as 58-year-old Tim McCormack, from the Hudson Valley, in upstate NY. "And there is no ongoing threat to New York City based on all the information we have right now".

The pilot, identified as Tim McCormack, died in the crash, law enforcement said.

Under federal flight rules for New York City, a helicopter pilot departing from that location would normally call LaGuardia, across the East River in the borough of Queens, to inform controllers it was taking off, though it is not strictly required to do so. A flight restriction in effect since President Donald Trump took office bans aircraft from flying below 3,000 feet (914 meters) within a 1-mile (1.6-kilometre) radius of Trump Tower, which is less than a half-mile (0.8 kilometres) from the crash site. Cuomo said it shook the building. "Had I known it became a helicopter rupture at the time, I'd had been some distance more panicked". "Those who had been in the constructing talked about they felt the constructing shake". The building was evacuated following the crash. It crashed on the roof of 787 Seventh Ave. about 11 minutes later.

"I started hearing the blare of sirens and knew something bad had happened", the 30-year-old lawyer said.

The first firefighters were on the scene within five minutes, Thomas Richardson, FDNY chief of fire operations told reporters.

Melvin Douglas, 50, who was selling umbrellas on the street, said he heard a "rumble" when the helicopter crash landed.

McCormack was formerly a volunteer fire chief for the East Clinton Fire District. It said in a statement that "our hearts are with his family and friends". The aircraft additionally featured IFR (instrument flight rules) certifications that allow operators to fly in lower visibility, however, pilots still be trained in the equipment.
