White House: "Trump 'deadly serious" about Mexico tariffs

US-Mexico Relations: Democrats, Republicans Find Fault In Trump's Tariffs To Address Southern Border Immigration

Trump's announcement late Thursday was the latest expansion of his trade wars.

Donald Trump is "deadly serious" about slapping tariffs on imports from Mexico, his chief of staff said on Sunday, even though the president "intentionally left the declaration sort of ad hoc" amidst fears of damage to the U.S. economy if he follows through on his threat.

Trump appeared to have no regrets about the move, tweeting on Saturday: "When you are the "Piggy Bank" Nation that foreign countries have been robbing and deceiving for years, the word TARIFF is a lovely word indeed!"

"The move is seen as a further disruption for U.S. manufacturing supply chains, adding to consumer costs, with the uncertainty undermining business investment", chief economist Scott Brown of Raymond James said on the investment firm's website.

US President Donald Trump did not mince his words when talking about Mexico, branding it nothing but an "abuser" that has been mistreating his country for decades by flooding the country with illegals, smugglers and drug cartels.

On Friday, Mexico's top farm lobby said Lopez Obrador should target agricultural goods from states that support Trump's Republican Party if the American leader carries out his threat to punish Mexico for the migrants heading north.

Via a statement issued by the White House, Trump also said that if Mexico doesn't comply, tariffs would rise to 10% by July and eventually to 25% by October. A major Mexican delegation led by Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard will discuss the dispute with USA officials in Washington on June 5.

Administration officials made the rounds of Sunday television talk shows with a week to go before Trump's June 10 deadline to impose the 5 percent tariff on Mexican goods.

"We will be firm and defend the dignity of Mexico", Ebrard said.

Mulvaney, who also appeared on NBC's "Meet the Press", said Mexico could take various steps to decrease the record numbers of migrants at the border.

"These tariffs, unlike previous tariffs that we've seen, where they're targeted maybe at particular imports, these are broad based", said Neil Bradley, the executive vice president for the pro-business U.S. Chamber of Commerce, earlier this week.

The tariff threat comes just as the administration has been pushing for passage of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which would update the North American Free Trade Agreement.

The tariff dispute is occurring as Trump is seeking congressional approval for a new U.S. -Canada-Mexico trade deal. "Coyotes and Illegal Immigrants, which they can do very easily, or our many companies and jobs that have been foolishly allowed to move South of the Border, will be brought back into the United States through taxation (Tariffs)", he warned.

Several top GOP lawmakers have expressed concerns that Trump's tariff threat could upend that deal.
