12 killed, scores wounded in Afghanistan Taliban car bombing

The Taliban and Afghan officials pledged to guarantee the security of public institutions such as schools religious centres mosques and hospitals

Baheer Ahmadi, the Kandahar governor's spokesman, said in a statement that 11 people had been killed, including nine civilians and two police officers, while another 80 - including women and children - were wounded.

The talks have not stopped Taliban from launching attacks.

"The fighting is over now".

The Ministry of Interior (MoI) in a statement said the militants launched the attack at around 4:30 pm local time on Thursday.

A police spokesman, Jamal Naseer Barakzai, earlier reported that a group of Taliban gunmen attacked the police command of Kandahar province after detonating an explosive-laden vehicle close to the building.

Pictures on social media showed a huge plume of smoke rising over the troubled city.

The source at Mirwais Regional Hospital in Kandahar, who asked not to be named, told Anadolu Agency that 60 people were also injured in the Taliban-claimed attack.

The Taliban previously claimed responsibility for two recent bomb attacks, one on July 1 in the capital, Kabul, and the other on July 7 in the southeastern province of Ghazni.

According to Amanullah Kamrani, a member of the Ghazni provincial council, Mateen was boarding a helicopter after a meeting with U.S. advisors when he was attacked.

Kandahar was the former seat of the Taliban when they ruled Afghanistan from 1996 until they were ousted in 2001.

"The attacker was killed when Americans returned fire", Kamrani said.

Update: We previously reported that Gen. Scott Miller, the top United States commander in Afghanistan, was said to be present at the incident detailed below.
