1st-degree murder charge in black teen’s killing

Michael Adams 27 was charged with murder after allegedly cutting a teen's throat.

Elijah Al-Amin's parents say he was driven - so much so that the 17-year-old worked two summer jobs ahead of his senior year, and was seeking a third.

Police say at about 1:45 a.m. local time Elijah Alamin was inside a convenience store when the suspect, Michael Adams, 27, came up behind him and stabbed him on the right side of the throat. Adams further claimed he had been attacked in the past by people who listen to rap: specifically, "blacks, Hispanics and Native Americans". After Adams was arrested, he told officers that Elijah "did not do anything to threaten him" and heard him listening to rap music in the parking lot.

Michael Paul Adams is seen in this booking photo obtained by CNN.

The witnesses told police that Al-Amin hadn't done or said anything to provoke the attack.

The dead teen has been identified as 17-year-old Elijah Alamin while 27-year-old Michael Adams is now in police custody for murder. Adams also said people who listen to rap music are a threat to the community, so he made a decision to be "proactive rather than reactive".

Adams was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, but the incident sparked widespread outraged across the country. Al-Amin was described by the New York Times as multiracial.

He continued, "You took a helluva kid..." "I don't understand it". The hashtag #JusticeForElijah modified into as soon as trending on Twitter earlier this week, with tweets from customers exhibiting team spirit in the teen's loss of life.

According to AZ Central, Al-Amin was listening to rap music while parked in his vehicle at a convenience store parking lot in Peoria, Arizona.

Civil rights activists are calling for a hate-crime investigation into the alleged killing of a black teenager by a white man just out of prison. "RIP Elijah", Booker wrote on Monday.

The Peoria Police Department did not respond to a request for comment.

Arizona does not have a separate "hate crime" charge, according to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office. "It's not completely off the table", Sheffert said.

Jacie Cotterell, Adams' lawyer, questioned his ability to access mental health services after he was released from prison.

In court and in an interview with "Good Evening Arizona", Cotterell accused the Department of Corrections of releasing Adams without sufficient resources or supervision.

"My client is a very unfortunate young man". "Now they are trying to say he was mentally ill - per usual". Many people on Twitter believe Adams should not be viewed as the victim and mental health issues can not always be a means for white extremism to be justified.

Bill Lamoreaux, a spokesman with the Arizona Department of Correction, however, had written in a statement that Adams "was not designated seriously ill" and was given contacts to give him care, housing and welfare, according to the Arizona Republic. Online records show Adams has had numerous run-ins with police, and ABC15 reported he was released July 2 after being held on previous charges, including aggravated assault.
