Amazon Music Unlimited gaining subscribers faster than Spotify and Apple

Amazon Music Growth Outpaces Spotify, Apple Music

"In April Amazon had more than 32m subscribers to all its music services including Unlimited and Prime Music".

Spotify have been building up to launch their music streaming service in Russian Federation for years.

"Amazon is the dark horse [in music]", Midia Research analyst Mark Mulligan told the publication.

Amazon's music-streaming service is reportedly gaining subscribers at a faster rate than the competition, which includes the likes of Apple Music, Google Play Music and Spotify. Google has offered a variety of streaming services via YouTube that it has shuttered, rebranded, and shuffled around, making it hard to quantify the company's traction with music listeners. And while that is dwarfed by Spotify's subscriber base of 100 million, Spotify's growth is reported to be much lower at about 25% a year.

Amazon Music Unlimited saw a 70% YoY growth. Steve Boom, VP of Amazon Music, said they are not battling for the same customers as everyone else.

Amazon is famously cagey when it comes to releasing meaningful numbers for its music services, but a well-briefed report by the Financial Times this morning offers some new numbers.

Per Thurrott, Midia credits Amazon's success to its Echo smart speakers, it's ubiquity with consumers and its price point. That's especially true if you have Amazon Prime (it's only $8 per month for Prime subscribers) or if you only use an Amazon smart speaker to listen ($4 per month), which may also help the service grow. "For the industry to reach its full potential, we can't just look at 15- to 22-year-olds", he added.
