Amazon Warehouse Workers Strike on 'Prime Day'

Amazon workers in US, Europe begin protests on Prime Day sale event

2019's upcoming Amazon Prime Day right around the corner and Prime members are gearing up for what is sure to be one busy day for employees at the profitable online shopping company.

We've seen some seriously impressive deals in the Amazon Prime Day sales, but this one is easily the best. Although Amazon is attempting to account for this by offering a wage of $15 an hour for every employee, it appears this has not made much of an impact in some regions.

Prime Day sales for Amazon are expected to hit $5 billion this year, up from $3.2 billion in 2018, which at the time represented its biggest ever global shopping event, JP Morgan analyst Doug Anmuth says in a research note.

Many protest participants expressed their commitment to the upcoming strike.

"The fact is Amazon offers already what this outside organization is asking for", said a company spokesperson in a statement, adding that Amazon does not expect to have any operational issues due to the strike. Let's sort that out - sign up for a free Amazon Prime 30-day free trial which allows you to access the annual shopping event without financial commitment (just do not forget to cancel before the month is up to avoid paying a penny). "We have an opportunity".

Workers at an Amazon fulfillment center outside Minneapolis have been advocating for workplace changes for more than a year, claiming the retailer's productivity quotas makes their jobs unsafe and needlessly stressful. A group of tech workers in Seattle, called Amazon Employees for Climate Justice, is supporting the strike.

"By doubling Prime Day's duration and halving the delivery time, the company is testing hundreds of thousands of workers' physical limits as though they were trained triathletes", said Stuart Appelbaum, president of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union.

The Monday protest is the latest in a series of disputes that the e-commerce giant has had with its warehouse workers.

Protests against the company were planned outside its offices in Seattle and San Francisco, while demonstrators in NY gathered at Bezos's luxury apartment building to deliver 270,000 signatures in support of workers' rights and demanding that Amazon cut ties with ICE and the Department of Homeland Security.

Pilots for Amazon Air, the company's air cargo operation, also said they "stand in solidarity with the warehouse workers" in Shakopee. They played recordings of children crying at a CBP detention facility and confronted Werner Vogels over Amazon's partnership with ICE, demanding "Cut your ties to ICE, Vogels, cut your ties to ICE".
