Biden apologizes for touting past work with segregationist senators

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and former Vice President Joe Biden

Biden told CNN in an interview aired on Friday that he "wasn't prepared for the person coming at me the way she came at me" and noted that Harris knows him and his son, Beau, who died of brain cancer in 2015.

"It's disappointing that Senator Harris chose to distort Vice President Biden's position on busing", tweeted Biden deputy campaign manager Kate Bedingfield, "particularly now that she is tying herself in knots trying not to answer the very question she posed to him!"

He pointed to what he called repeated missteps, including Biden's comments on segregationists and the former vice president's recent reversal on the Hyde Amendment, a long-standing congressional ban on using federal health care money to pay for abortions.

"There's still mandatory busing that exists today", Harris said.

At a Charleston restaurant on Sunday, he explained that he picked SC as the place where he would apologize, wanting to choose "an audience that would in fact be most likely to have been offended" by the comments.

Vanessa Phelan, the chair of the Northwest Des Moines Democrats, announced her endorsement of the senator after she met and spoke with Harris at her Des Moines town hall on Wednesday evening.

Biden has been on the defensive since the confrontation with Harris, who criticized his opposition to federally mandated busing to integrate schools in the 1970s and his willingness to work with segregationist senators.

Despite the thinly veiled jibes towards his rivals, it remains unlikely that Biden would pivot so radically from his affable "Uncle Joe" persona which positioned to be seen as an antidote to President Trump's aggressive posturing. Kamala Harris to confront him on issues of race the way she did.

Kamala Harris raised almost $12 million during the second quarter of the Democratic primary - giving her a financial boost after a fiery debate exchange with Joe Biden.

Front-runner for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination since officially entering the race, Biden's support has sagged in some opinion polls, thwarting an effort to breeze through the primary season and focus on a general election campaign against President Donald Trump.

New Jersey Senator Cory Booker, who'd demanded an apology from Biden for his mid-June comments, said he felt "a sense of gratitude" that the former vice president was willing to admit fault.

Senator Kamala Harris raised almost $12 million from more than 279,000 people in the second quarter of the year, which ended on June 30, her campaign announced Friday.

Harris planned to appear in Florence, Hartsville and Myrtle Beach in her ninth trip to SC, having spent more time there than any other state. Segregation persists now not necessarily as a function of legislators. "That is one of my highest priorities, and we have got to deal with that". "It's as if my opponents want you to believe I served from 1972 until 2008 - and then took the next eight years off".

"That resonated with a lot of African Americans", he said.

"Barack and I will support whoever wins the primary".

But some Democrats said there was still plenty of time for Biden to recover.

Although he was referring to the few seconds granted by moderators on the crowded debate stage, his words went viral on Twitter as a symbolic admission that he is a man of yesteryear in a party demanding radical change. But Catanch, 73, said she wasn't concerned about any critique of Biden's past stances, including on busing, and instead admired what she characterized as Biden's commitment to stay above the fray. "We have got to back whoever the nominee is, and I pray to God that's Joe".
