Black Caucus Member Upbraids AOC for Using 'Race Card'

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez D-N.Y. prepares to do a television interview on Capitol Hill Thursday

Rep. William Lacy Clay, a Democrat from Missouri, slammed freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Thursday, saying she unfairly played "the race card" in a spat with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Cheney also hit back at Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D., N.Y.) for calling for abolishing the Department of Homeland Security.

Leaving a private member meeting Thursday morning, Representative Gregory Meeks, Democrat of NY, said members were buzzing about both Chakrabarti's tweet and Ocasio-Cortez's remark. Also, the British navy says Iran tried to interfere with a British tanker in the Persian Gulf.

Ocasio-Cortez is of Puerto Rican descent, Pressley is African-American, Omar is an African immigrant, and Tlaib is Palestinian American.

In an interview with "The New Yorker Radio Hour", Ocasio-Cortez repeated her call for the abolition of ICE-Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Last month, Congress passed a $4.6 billion humanitarian aid package - the final vote was 305 to 102 - several liberal Democrats (including the entire Hispanic Caucus) were furious that they voted to give Trump any money that he could use for whatever he wanted including border security and detention centers.

There is a "lack of willingness to recognize what the nation went through, the worst attack in our history", Cheney said. "You come and talk to me about it", Pelosi said Wednesday, according to Politico.

"You got a complaint?" she reportedly asked.

"This bill - opposed by the Hispanic Caucus and almost 100 Democratic members of the House - will not stop the Trump administration's chaos and cruelty", the Hispanic Caucus said in a statement provided by the Times.

"When it comes to women of color in Congress, particularly the freshman, it's that we both have encountered and represent communities that have been auctioned off and negotiated off for the last 20 years. But I don't think that means that that's who she's targeting".

"We respect the value of every member of our caucus", she said.

"When these comments first started, I kind of thought that she was keeping the progressive flank at more of an arm's distance in order to protect more-moderate members, which I understood", Ocasio-Cortez told The Post's Rachael Bade and Mike DeBonis.

"It's time to move on".

And some members appear to hope that further discussion could lead to a productive result. At the core of the matter was that Rep. Pelosi disrespected the freshmen representatives, primarily about their massive following on social media.

Jayapal was spotted speaking with Pelosi on the House floor on Thursday afternoon for around 10 minutes. "And so we're looking forward to having that discussion with her", Jayapal said on Thursday.

He added that AOC's suggestion that Pelosi is racist was "inappropriate" and "unfair".

Said House majority leader Steny Hoyer, Democrat of Maryland, "I think all staffers ought to allow their members to speak".
