Brazil's Bolsonaro says may appoint son as USA ambassador

Bolsonaro's Son Wins Backing to Become Brazil's Ambassador to US

President Jair Bolsonaro, who said his campaign previous year was inspired by U.S. President Donald Trump, has made friendly overtures to the American leader and made similar use of family members as official advisers. "He's friends with Donald Trump's children".

The president said the nomination "would be the flawless message to Washington".

Eduardo Bolsonaro, 35, who is now serving as a congressman and advises his father on foreign affairs, told journalists he would earn the post if it were supplied. "It is not nepotism, I would never do that", Mr Bolsonaro said on a live social media broadcast on Friday.

President Bolsonaro had earlier said that the appointment would hinge on his son's acceptance.

"It is a total scandal ... a flagrant case of nepotism that can not be accepted", Folha de Sao Paulo quoted opposition representative Randolfe Rodrigues as saying.

The appointment of a president's son would be unprecedented in the diplomatic history of Brazil, where ambassadors are usually career diplomats, columnist Diogo Schelp wrote.

Mr Bolsonaro uses several of his members of the family as legitimate advisers.

Though he now serves as the head of the House of Representatives' Foreign Relations Committee, he has never taken an actual diplomatic job before.

According to his official resume, Eduardo participated in a work experience exchange program in the United States in 2004 and 2005. On the same trip he spoke to reporters wearing a "Trump 2020" baseball hat and also sported a hat that said, "Make Brazil Great Again", a reference to Donald Trump's campaign slogan.

Eduardo turned 35 on Wednesday, Brazil's minimum legal age for ambassadorships.

The place of ambassador has been vacant since April.

Eduardo would must resign as a congressman if he did take in the place of ambassador.
