Democrats Delay Mueller Hearing to Allow More Time for Questioning

House considering a delay of Robert Mueller’s testimony

The former special counsel's testimony before the House Judiciary Committee and the House Intelligence Committee has been pushed back from July 17th until July 24th, just two days before a six-week House recess.

Lawmakers began to consider a delay when Judiciary Committee members saw that numerous panel's less senior lawmakers would not get time to ask questions.

"All members - Democrats and Republicans - of each committees could have a significant alternative to query the Particular Counsel in public, and the American folks will lastly have a chance to listen to instantly from Mr. Mueller about what his investigation uncovered", mentioned Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler and Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff. Mueller had been scheduled to appear before both committees for two hours of questioning.

Mueller released his report on his investigation in April, in which he said he found no basis for accusing US President Donald Trump of collusion with Russian Federation during his 2016 campaign.

"The House Judiciary Committee will convene on July 24 at 8:30am with Special Counsel Mueller testifying in public for three hours". It said no collusion, and it said, effectively, no obstruction.

Mueller said because of longstanding Justice Department regulations that a sitting president can not be indicted, his team of investigators didn't consider trying to indict Trump.

The official, who declined to be named to discuss the confidential negotiations, said that the committee had recently heard nearly five hours of testimony from another member of Mueller's team.

Mueller has expressed his reluctance to testify and said he won't go beyond what's in his report.

The Judiciary Committee additionally sought to interview former Mueller aides Aaron Zebley and James Quarles behind closed doorways on Wednesday. Mueller said at the news conference that charging a president with a crime was "not an option" because of longstanding Justice Department policy. But Democrats want to know more about how he made that decision and when.

But many Democrats were also concerned that the limited time period of roughly two hours before each committee wouldn't be enough time for Mueller's testimony to have an impact. "A senior source said there was a "breakdown in negotiations" to have Mueller appear". It isn't clear when new hearings might take place. "The new format will allow all Judiciary Republicans to question the special counsel on July 24".

During his comments, Mueller said he had no further plans to speak publicly on matters that were addressed in his more than 400-page report. And those on the Judiciary Committee who weren't in line to get questions were up in arms they might not get their shot to question Mueller with millions tuning in.
