Djokovic beats Agut to reach Wimbledon final

Roger Federer 'My children'd better not watch my Wimbledon matches now'

Their first meeting on a Wimbledon court since 2008 did not disappoint.

"He played really well".

"Novak is the defending champion and he has shown that this week", added Federer.

That self-assured Federer went weirdly AWOL in the second set, arguably the worst frame he's ever played at Wimbledon, definitely the poorest as per score.

Top seed and four-time victor Djokovic reached his sixth Wimbledon final, and 25th at the majors, with a nervy 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Spain's 23rd seed Roberto Bautista Agut. Nadal famously beat Federer in the 2008 Wimbledon final, in a match that spanned nearly five hours and is considered by many to be one of the best matches in history, if not the best.

"I thought the biggest points in the match went my way", the eight-time Wimbledon champion said after the match.

Friday's match turned on an unbelievable 45-shot rally in the seventh game of the third set, which Djokovic won to hold serve and stay a break up. Roger Federer would advance to his 12th Wimbledon final and Nadal would be sent packing, along with his hopes for Grand Slam No. 19.

Federer will face Novak Djokovic in a Sunday morning final match between two of the all-time tennis greats.

Kristina Mladenovic and Timea Babos lost in the semifinals to Hsieh Su-Wei and Barbora Strycova, 7-6 (5), 6-4.

The Serbian battled past Roberto Bautista Agut 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 as he chases back-to-back Wimbledon successes for the second time in his career.

"[I'm] sad for the loss because for me was another opportunity", he said.

Roger Federer greets Rafael Nadal after their semi-final.

Bautista Agut had no answers but can be pleased with his efforts in what is turning out to be the best year of his career, having never previously reached even a quarter-final at a Grand Slam. But the Spaniard proved incredibly tough in the latter stages, and made Federer earn every single point towards the end.

As entertaining as that first semifinal was - including a 45-stroke point won by Djokovic - it was merely a tasty appetizer ahead of the day's delectable main course.

One would not have expected, back in 2008, that these two titans of tennis would still be going mano-a-mano more than a decade later amidst the new guard hellions of the sport, the flashy Next Gen studs who performed so disappointingly over the last fortnight. But the top-seeded Serb saved two break chances in the third set and won easily in the fourth, though he needed five match points in the final game to close it out. When Nadal jumped out to a 3-2 lead in the first-set tiebreaker, Federer used sublime returning to reel off five points in a row to claim it.

The two are certainly no strangers to one another, playing 47 times on the ATP Tour with Djokovic edging the overall record on 25 wins. It, and probably the match, hinged on the seventh game as Djokovic, a break to the good, served at 30-40.

"It is something that is going to be hard to see it again".

After watching Bautista Agut's shot hit the net tape, pop in the air and slide over for a victor that tied things at a set apiece, Centre Court spectators stood and cheered. Moments later, he was ending a 45-stroke baseline exchange - the longest on record at Wimbledon, where such stats date to 2006 - with a backhand victor to save a break point.
