Edu: Arsenal appoint former player as technical director

William Saliba Arsenal

The former Gunner who was a member of the Invincibles in the 2003-04 season, will coordinate the work of the club's first-team coaching group, academy, player scouting and recruitment. And now the Copa America is over following Brazil's 3-1 win over Peru on Sunday, the final details are expected to be confirmed as the 41-year-old makes his return.

Diaz still has 4 years left on his contract at Real Madrid but it is highly unlikely that he be a regular fixture in the squad for the upcoming season and should look for another club where he can get more first-team football. Now it is down to Edu to unearth some young gems from South America and elsewhere as Arsenal can not compete with the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Man United to sign superstar players for big money, as things stand.

Arsenal have appointed former midfielder Edu as the club's technical director.

Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny will reportedly quit the Emirates Stadium this summer in order to join Bordeaux.

"It can be an unsettling period for any player and that is understandable but until a club comes up with any sort of realistic valuation of the player we don't have to do anything and we won't".

During his four-year stay from 2001 to 2005, Edu has made 127 appearances for Arsenal and won two Premier League trophies.

Following the departure of chief executive Ivan Gazidis to AC Milan, Raul Sanllehi has been in the head of football role and Edu's arrival has always been rumored.

Last season's Europa League runners-up had been looking for a new director since the departure of Sven Mislintat in February and have turned ex-Brazil worldwide Edu, who played for the Gunners from 2001 to 2005.
