Europe's Galileo sat-nav system has been down since Friday

Galileo sat-nav system experiences service outage

"This means that the signals may not be available nor meet the minimum performance levels defined in the service definition documents and shoudl be employed at users' own risk". Once 30 Galileo satellites are in their final orbit and fully deployed by 2020, the European satellite navigation system will go into regular operation. At the moment, they'd have to switch to other systems like GPS for navigational purposes.

Saturday, July 13, two more notes were broadcasted confirming the generalized breakdown ("The navigation messages for all satellites are expired since 01:50 (UTC) on 12/07/2019") following "a technical incident in the Galileo ground infrastructure".

The satellite network has been largely down since Friday 12 July due to a technical incident related to its ground infrastructure, as the European Union agency GSA reports.

Instead, these devices will be depending on data coming from the American Global Positioning System (GPS). "An Anomaly Review Board has been immediately set up to analyze the exact root cause and to implement recovery actions".

Galileo provides "initial services" since December 2016.

The network's search and rescue function, which helps pinpoint boat crews or hikers in distress, is unaffected. According to the specialist sat-nav site Inside GNSS (yes, that's a thing), the glitch happened at the Precise Timing Facility (PTF) in Italy, where all the Galileo system clocks are calibrated and checked.

"Experts are in the process of repairing the situation as quickly as possible", says GSA in an official statement.

However, the outage is an embarrassing hitch for the European Space Agency and European Commission project that is going three times above its €3 billion projected budget.

An outage across the entire network is therefore a matter of significant concern and no little embarrassment.

Galileo is also said to be more accurate than rival systems.
