Huawei Hongmeng OS is not the Android-alt we expected

Huawei is Now Saying Hong Meng OS is Not an Android Alternative

According to the state-owned Xinhua outlet, Huawei senior vice-president Catherine Chen said HongMeng OS was for industrial use and that it aims to keep using Android for smartphones.

In Brussels, Chen also said that Huawei intends to continue using Android for its smartphones.

Earlier this month, Huawei's founder Ren Zhengfei said that Huawei's supposedly forthcoming mobile operating system will be much faster than Android and will be able to run on a variety of devices.

Chen added that while a mobile platform usually contains millions of lines of code, HongMeng had "hundreds of thousands" of lines and was more secure.

His remarks came after Google restricted Huawei's use of its Android OS in May following the US Commerce Department's statement that it was adding Huawei Technologies Co and 70 affiliates to its so-called "Entity List".

Talk about Hongmeng started in May after the US government banned Huawei from doing business in the US - without suppliers first obtaining a licence from the US Department of Commerce. Huawei does have access to AOSP, but it lost access to Google's services. Yu also told German website Die Welt in March that it was working on a "plan B" operating system in case it could no longer use Google's Android or Microsoft's Windows.

The move banned Huawei from acquiring components and technology from American firms without prior USA government approval, under the pretext that the equipment made by the company poses a national security risk. Those countries included: Canada, Cambodia, South Korea, New Zealand and Peru, as well as the European Union and UK. Huawei also trademarked another operating system called as Harmony OS.

With an operating system base already available.
