Mortal Kombat film will have fatalities on the big screen

Sub-Zero

The games aren't just popular because they're good beat-em-ups, it's also because they feature ridiculously over-the-top violence - with the series' Fatalities being as much a part of Mortal Kombat as Sub-Zero, Scorpion, or convoluted timelines. Writer Greg Russo has revealed that, yes, it's going to be R-Rated (a first for the franchise, remarkably) and will include as-yet-unconfirmed Fatalities.

Because let's be real Mortal Kombat games are awesome fight games.

In a tweet posted today, Russo, who is also penning the Resident Evil reboot, said online, "Since it's already been stated by other members of the team, I'm gonna put this one to bed".

That won't be the case with this new Mortal Kombat movie, though.

In 1995, Mortal Kombat fans were blessed with a motion picture based on their favorite blood-and-guts fighting game. This film will follow the plot as all basic MK films and Games.

A new Mortal Kombat movie is on the way, and this time the violence level will more accurately reflect the source material. It had more realistic action, gore, and fatalities. Perhaps they'll follow the time-hopping shenanigans of Mortal Kombat 11 as a workaround for some extra deaths without needing a larger cast.

Mortal Kombat is set to start shooting this year, with a 2021 release date likely. It aired for two seasons before Machinima expressed interest in a big-screen adaptation, which eventually got cancelled.
