Nev. death possibly linked to Calif. earthquakes

Officials in Nevada are investigating a death possibly related to the California quake felt in parts of the state on July 4.

The 56-year-old man was found pinned beneath his Jeep on Tuesday about 100-miles from the earthquake's epicenter near Ridgecrest, California.

Deputies sent to the rural property, on the northeast outskirts of the border town, found the man pinned under a Jeep that had previously been jacked up safely, according to Tippetts.

"Based on preliminary timing and circumstances at the scene, the Nye County Sheriff's investigation reveals that his death may be a result of the vehicle falling off the jacks on July 4 during the quake", Tippetts said.

It was not immediately clear whether the man was trapped alive for some time or was killed instantly.

It was part of a sequence of earthquakes that began about a week earlier, although the wave did not make its presence known until a 6.4-magnitude quake on July 4.

On July 4 and 5, Southern California was hit by magnitude 6.4 and 7.1 earthquakes, respectively.

However, no fatalities or major injuries were reported at the time, according to the Associated Press.

Officials were still reviewing damage Tuesday in communities outside the base.

Water and gas service had been restored at the base, but engineers were ensuring buildings were safe to enter. The shaking cracked walls in a chapel and school and brought down commissary shelves, Allen said. "I mean-they say that it's happened and you've heard about it but once you're in it, it's completely different, it's terrifying".

Around 1,289 of those were over magnitude 2.5 - strong enough to be felt - and 28 over 4.5, nearly violent enough to damage buildings.

To drive this need for a plan home, "the United States Geological Survey (USGS) warned that another natural disaster of a similar magnitude could strike within the next week, while aftershocks have occurred an average of once a minute since Friday night".
