Newcastle in talks to sign Joelinton from Hoffenheim

Newcastle United have hired Steve Bruce to replace Rafael Benitez as manager amid fan unrest at the lack of spending and ambition at the Premier League club under much-criticised owner Mike Ashley.

With no time to fly out to Nanjing, the 58-year-old will have seen his team outplayed on TV by a Wolves side admittedly at a far more advanced stage of their pre-season preparations.

Newcastle's player of the year Salomon Rondon has returned to parent club West Brom since the end of last season, while top-scorer Ayoze Perez has also departed for Leicester City.

"A report in France on Tuesday suggested Newcastle had turned their attention instead to former Lyon boss Bruno Genesio, but sources on Tyneside were quick to dismiss the speculation and insist Corbridge-born Bruce remained their number one target".

Academy coaches Ben Dawson and Neil Redfearn have taken charge of training since the players returned from their summer breaks and while Lascelles has been impressed by their work, he is happy Bruce is now in post.

They explain the Magpies, along with two other clubs had wanted the Brazilian during the winter market.

"Now the manager has come in, we're really looking forward to it". Even 6,000 miles away in China, there was the odd isolated "Ashley out" chant.

"We want to show the fans and everyone we can compete".

"We will roll our sleeves up and we'll be giving it everything from the off to ensure supporters have a successful team that they can be proud of".

"There has been a lot of negativity around it and I think that is really unfair for a man who has achieved what he has", the Champions League victor told the Telegraph.

"We are trying to progress and improve and the idea is to try to accelerate but it is going well".
