Simona Halep blitzes Serena Williams to win Wimbledon title

Williams will play for her eighth Wimbledon title

With last year's French Open, her first grand slam title, under her belt, Simona Halep decided that 2019 would be "a chill year".

On this cloudy, cool afternoon, with the temperature in the low 70s (low 20s Celsius), Halep began with a pair of service breaks and even delivered the match's first ace, at 106 miles per hour, which put her out front 4-0 after 11 astonishing minutes.

It was the 11th Wimbledon final for Williams, and first for Halep.

Halep, who is now looking forward to returning to the All England Club as a life member "to have dinner, have lunch, play a little bit of tennis" joked that her victory on Saturday was nearly by royal command.

With every minute the match went on Williams, who was short of fitness after playing seven tournaments all year, was being stretched out of her comfort zone and away from victory.

"Those finals I lost in the past helped me for this moment", she said. It's something special and I'll never forget this day.

"She literally played out of her mind".

"I don't know. I feel like I'm just really on this journey of just doing the best that I can, playing the best that I can when I can". "My stomach was not well before the match, but I came on court and gave my best".

"Have you ever played a better match?" commentator Sue Barker asked Halep.

Williams would place a hand on her hip.

Williams admitted she was beaten by the better player on Centre Court. I don't know what she wants. With a 9-1 career record over Halep, including three matches at majors, it seemed like everything was in place for Williams to make history, and redeem her lopsided loss against Angelique Kerber during the 2018 campaign and earn her eighth Wimbledon title in the process.

"In everything she does, Serena shines a light on what all of us must fight for in order to achieve equality for all". She had been injured for much of the season leading into the tournament, but she was starting to show a return to vintage form and said she no longer was experiencing any pain in her knee or elsewhere.

"I've got to keep trying, keep fighting and enjoying the sport", the American said.

Williams, 37, was in pursuit of her 24th Grand Slam title. "You can get nervous, too nervous", she said. "I just didn't think about what is happening and where I am, I just wanted to be aggressive, to play my plan".

Showing off the talents and traits that once lifted her to No. 1 in the rankings, Halep never really gave Williams a chance to get into the match. Just stop all this insanity because she is trying to be everything.

The Wimbledon championships are hosted by one of the world's most exclusive tennis clubs and winning a title confers lifetime membership.
