At least ten people were killed after several gunmen stormed into the Asasey Hotel here on Friday after detonating a auto bomb at the hotel's entrance, as per local police.Somali police captain Mahad Abdia told CNN that the deceased include two journalists, a regional president, and tribal elders.A meeting regarding the upcoming local elections was taking place at the hotel when the incident occurred.

Famed Somali journalist Hodan Nalayeh, founder of Intergrity Tv, has been killed in Kismayu hotel attack.

"We have confirmed the death of seven people including a former local administration minister and a lawmaker", said Abdi Dhuhul, a security official.

Local leaders and politicians were meeting at the hotel at the time of the attack.

Al Shabaab fighters have stormed Hotel Asasey where a meeting of legislators was in progress.

He said the victims include two journalists.

According to the sources, the hotel was first struck by a bomb blast, then assailants launched gunfire. "It is too early to know if there are any casualties", Major Mohamed Abdi, a police officer, told Reuters news agency from Kismayo on Friday.


"There is chaos inside, I saw several dead bodies carried from the scene and people are fleeing from the nearby buildings", he said.

Abdiasis Abu Musab, al Shabaab's military operation spokesman, said the militant group was behind the attack and that fighting was still going on.

Hussein Nur, a shopkeeper in Kismayo, told Reuters: "There were many people including officials and elders, mainly from one clan, who were discussing the upcoming Kismayo election".

Nur was referring to elections in the city due sometime in August.

Al Shabab was driven out of Kismayo in 2012, and the port has been relatively peaceful in recent years - unlike many other places in southern and central Somalia.

The militants have been carrying out more frequent attacks in the capital Mogadishu, despite the heavy presence of African Union peacekeepers and US-trained Somali troops.
