In a similar accident last month, the Jinnah Express hit a freight auto near Hyderabad resulting in the deaths of three people and injuring several others.

A speeding passenger train on Thursday rammed into a freight train in Pakistan's eastern Punjab province, killing at least eleven people and injuring 60 others, according to media reports.

The engine and three carriages of the passenger train were completely destroyed in the collision.

However, Railways Minister Sheikh Rasheed while speaking to Geo News said the train accident near Sadiqabad was the result of human negligence. Many lines were constructed by British colonial rulers before 1947 and have not been upgraded.

"Inquiry has been ordered into the matter", the minister said in his statement on the collision between two trains that claimed lives of 21 people and injured 79 in Sadiqabad.

The injured were rushed to a hospital.


He announced compensation of Rs 1.5 million for the families of the deceased and Rs 0.5 million each for the injured, Dawn newspaper reported.

In a tweet, Prime Minister Khan said he has asked Railways Minister to take emergency steps to counter decades of neglect of railway infrastructure and ensure safety standards.

He said 11 passengers including eight women and the driver of the locomotive were killed on immediately while over 80 others among them women and children were injured. He said that action should be taken against those responsible for the incident.

In another accident in the same province involving a passenger bus, at least 13 people were killed, local media reported.
