Trump hits out at China over slowing agricultural purchases

China imports from US plunge in June amid tariff war

China retaliated with its own penalty duties and ordered importers to find non-U.S. suppliers.

The two countries are fighting over USA allegations that China deploys predatory tactics - including stealing trade secrets and forcing foreign firms to hand over technology - in a headlong drive to challenge American technological dominance.

China's imports from the United States plunged in June amid a tariff war with Washington while exports to the US market weakened.

President Trump on Thursday accused China of breaking a promise President Xi Jinping made at the G20 to buy more United States farm products - ratcheting up the pressure as talks resumed over the trade war between the world's two largest economies.

"The data confirm our view that the high tariffs have a negative impact on the domestic economy", said Tao Wang, chief China economist at UBA AG in Hong Kong.

"Mexico is doing great at the Border, but China is letting us down in that they have not been buying the agricultural products from our great Farmers that they said they would", Mr Trump said on Thursday on Twitter.

"Macroeconomic indicators of growth, employment and consumer prices are all in normal ranges", said Liu, the top economic aide to President Xi Jinping and China's top negotiator in trade talks with the Trump administration, according to the official state-run Xinhua News Agency.

Trump met his counterpart Xi on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Japan in June and agreed to revive negotiations, but a trade agreement looks increasingly distant.

"It seems the two sides are arm-wrestling about the basis on which they'll resume talks, as well as when and where", said Zhou Xiaoming, a former commerce ministry official and diplomat.

China's global exports sank 1.3 percent to $212.8 billion while imports fell 7.3 percent to $161.9 billion.

U.S. Department of Agriculture data indicate that China actually slowed its purchases of American agriculture products following the Osaka meeting.

Trump has imposed 25 percent tariffs on $250 billion of Chinese goods and has pledged only to accept a deal with Beijing that includes structural reforms to the way China does business. "Hopefully they will start soon!" "While a deal makes sense for both sides this year, it's far from guaranteed and could hit many more snags".
