United Kingdom ambassador to Washington quits after leaked memo spat

"The current situation is making it impossible for me to carry out my role as I would like", Sir Kim continued in his letter.

Britain's ambassador to Washington resigned on Wednesday after Donald Trump labelled him "stupid" and "wacky" following the release of confidential memos from the envoy in which he branded the USA president's administration inept.

His private assessments were frank and unfiltered, describing the Trump White House as unpredictable, clumsy and inept. "We should be well placed to do this".

US President Donald Trump lashed out against Darroch in a series of tweets, branding the envoy "wacky" and "very stupid", and said he would no longer deal with the diplomat.

The envoy said that, although his posting being due to end later this year, he believed it would be better to leave early.

When Mr Johnson was asked on Tuesday night about how he would handle the situation with Sir Kim during the televised debate between himself and Jeremy Hunt, he refused to say whether he would keep the ambassador on or not.

It led to a scathing tirade from the USA president.

Reports suggest that it was at that point that Darroch decided that he must resign.

"We are not big fans of that man and he has not served the United Kingdom well", he continued.

Mr Johnson, who was Mayor of London at the time, hit back at the remarks, and said: "When Donald Trump says that there are parts of London that are no-go areas, I think he's betraying a quite stupefying ignorance that makes him, frankly, unfit to hold the office of President of the United States".

Shadow Foreign Secretary Emily Thornberry claimed Mr Darroch had "been bullied out of his job, because of Donald Trump's tantrums and Boris Johnson's pathetic lick-spittle response".

And while Boris Johnson's hesitation in backing him was a factor in Darroch's resignation, it was not the main reason.

Tom Tugendhat, the Conservative chairman of parliament's foreign affairs committee, warned the incident could have far-reaching implications.

"This is not the first time a British ambassador has left post or resigned because of actions against the host government, but usually they are governments with whom we have problematic relations rather than friendly relations", McDonald said. The Prime Minister, Foreign Secretary and whole of the public service have stood with you: you were the target of a malicious leak; you were simply doing your job.

Trump was given the red-carpet treatment during a state visit to Britain last month, but there are tensions over his policies towards Iran and China.

Britain is hoping to strike a major post-Brexit trade deal with Washington as one of the upsides of leaving the bloc.

It seems the deliberate leaking of Kim Darroch's email was aimed at undermining him, so the new unelected Tory PM can appoint a Trumpian patsy to Washington.

Darroch has received support from across the British political spectrum.

According to The New York Times, Darroch - who, among other taunts, said Trump "radiates insecurity" and could "crash and burn" - is evidently not alone among diplomats in communicating similar sentiments to their governments. One source close to Mr Johnson said the ambassador reassured him he was not to blame.
