McGregor joined Kennedy on stage to confirm rumors that he would return as the Jedi master who was first portrayed by Alec Guinness in the 1977 original Star Wars. McGregor has frequently spoken about his desire to return to the role.

"It's been four years of saying 'well, I don't know, '" in response to fan questions, McGregor told the crowd. 'Now I can say, 'Yes.

Fans have long awaited an Kenobi-focused Star Wars story, and it was reported earlier this month that McGregor was in talks for the Disney+ series.

'We have all the scripts written, and we're ready to go next year, we can't wait to start production, ' said Kennedy.

McGregor played the younger version of the Jedi master in the three Star Wars prequel movies starting with 1999's The Phantom Menace.

Little is known about the show at this point, but it will be part of the formidable slate of titles to appear on the new Disney+ streaming service.

The untitled series is among a number of splashy projects that Disney is banking on to make its new streaming platform competitive.
