DJ Arafat, an Ivorian singer with a huge following in francophone Africa, has died after a road accident in Abidjan, the state broadcaster RTI said on Monday.

According to state broadcaster RTI, DJ Arafat was riding his motorcycle when he smashed into a vehicle.

On Monday, hundreds of fans had gathered outside the hospital where DJ Arafat was admitted weeping and chanting 'Arafat can not die'. Initially, reports suggested that he was critically injured, he was taken to an Abidjan hospital, but he died later.


Social media has been thrown into a state of shock after news trickled in yesterday- August 12 that Ivorian biggest music export, DJ Arafat has kicked the bucket after he rammed his motorcycle into a vehicle in Abidjan, killing him instantly. Surfing through social media, we have come across a video of the wife of the DJ cum musician after news of his death got to her. "RIP Yorobo I love you", Nigerian musician Davido wrote. His real name is Ange Didier Huon and he was hugely followed in French-speaking western and central African countries, and he has 11 albums to his name.

DJ Arafat was named "Best Artist of the Year" at the Ivorian "Coupe-decale" Awards in 2016 and 2017. His mother was a well-known singer and his father a prominent sound engineer, one music manager said. "He will remain a force for Ivorian and African music".
