Hong Kong airport reopens as Trudeau urges China to address 'serious concerns'

Police clashed with demonstrators at nearly a dozen locations on Sunday

"We have resumed check-ins", a spokesman for the airport told AFP, confirming flights would be resuming within the next hour at one of the world´s busiest aviation hubs.

Pointing to an estimated average daily rate of MOP$790 million through the first 11 days of August, Bernstein analysts Vitaly Umansky, Eunice Lee and Kelsey Zhu said, "We are beginning to see a negative impact from the protests in Hong Kong which is causing some transport disruption and beginning to create a headwind to China visitation into Hong Kong (and onward visitation into Macau)".

"Take a minute to think, look at our city, our home, do you all really want to see it pushed into an abyss", Lam said, although she again refused to make any concessions to the protesters.

Violent protests are driving Hong Kong down a "path of no return", the city's leader warned Tuesday as its airport struggled to recover from an unprecedented shutdown triggered by a rally and authorities in Beijing sent more ominous signals that the unrest must end.

In June, Hong Kong saw its biggest demonstration since the sit-in protests over proposed electoral reforms brought the city to a standstill five years ago.

"All other flights have been canceled for the rest of today", the airport statement said. She went on to describe how police had turned Hong Kong's Kwai Fong subway station into a "gas chamber" and alleged that police also fired at protesters "within a metre's range of their guns".

The demonstrations have become increasingly violent, with police using tear gas and rubber bullets, and protesters sometimes hurling bricks and bottles. So, what exactly is happening in Hong Kong now and why are people protesting? Meanwhile, Cathay Pacific has cancelled more than 200 flights to and out of Hong Kong on Tuesday.

In 1997, Hong Kong was returned to China, under the assumption that there would be a "one country, two systems" operation in place - meaning there would be one country, China, but two distinct Chinese regions: China and Hong Kong.

Hong Kong police have defended their use of force against protesters.

China's military - the People's Liberation Army - has a garrison of 6,000 soldiers in Hong Kong.

Around 50 protesters remained camped in the terminals on Tuesday morning, while more than 100 passengers were spotted queuing at Cathay's ticket counter, Reuters news agency reported.

Thousands of people swarmed inside the global airport as the city braces for more violence between pro-democracy activists and riot police. In recent years, however, some Hong Kong residents have accused Beijing of chipping away at the democratic freedoms promised to them under the agreement.

He said the protesters' "violent crimes" must be dealt with "resolutely" and "without mercy".

Legislators and journalists were invited to witness the display of extreme crowd control tactics, which came after a weekend of protests at the airport and on the streets of one of the city's main shopping districts.

"I feel that I have to do something".
