Hong Kong airport suspends check-ins due to protests

"The police are continuing to use all sorts of weapons to challenge the bottom line of Hong Kong people with their weapons..." "Hong Kong has reached an inflection point where all those who are concerned about Hong Kong's future must say "no" to law breakers and "no" to those engaged in violence".

The 149 people, arrested between August 9 and August 12, comprise 111 male and 38 female, aged between 15 to 53.

Protesters hurled bricks at officers and ignored warnings to leave before tear gas was deployed in the Sham Shui Po area, police said, calling a march there an "unauthorized assembly".

The mostly young black-clad protesters have chanted slogans such as "No rioters, only tyranny!" and "Liberate Hong Kong!" while approaching travellers with flyers describing their demands and explaining the unrest.

Police have also reported injuries among their ranks, including eye irritation from laser pointers, burns from petrol bombs and bruises and cuts from flying.

Metro stations in Hong Kong resumed regular service on Monday and streets were being cleaned of debris as the city recovered from another night of violent clashes between anti-government protesters and police.

Hong Kong has seen nine weeks of protests, with no end in sight.

"The level of political risk associated with operating in Hong Kong is unprecedently high and the situation isn't simply a flash in the pan", said Hugo Brennan, principal Asia analyst at global risk consultancy Veritas Maplecroft. A Cathay Pacific flight left Perth as scheduled just before midnight Monday and is due to land in Hong Kong at about 7.30am Tuesday. A large crowd sat under umbrellas, which are both a protest symbol in Hong Kong and protection from the summer heat. "The police action has gone totally nonsensical", she said.

Demonstrators threw up barricades across Hong Kong at the weekend, as police fired tear gas into crowded underground train stations as well as rubber bullets and pepper pellets at close range.

At Tsim Sha Tsui, one female protester was shot in the right eye with a police's bean bag round, which penetrated through her goggles.

All passenger flights in and out of Hong Kong were cancelled Monday afternoon after thousands of pro-democracy protesters flooded the city's airport to denounce police violence, stranding many Thai nationals.

China's Civil Aviation Administration said Friday that it will ban Cathay employees who support or take part in "illegal demonstrations, protests and violent attacks, as well as those who have had radical behaviors" from working on those flights.

Pro-democracy lawmakers attended the presentation holding signs that read "HK Police Murderers" and quarrelled with pro-Beijing lawmakers, who praised the police for their response to the demonstrations.

Not all are supportive of the movement, which began in June against an extradition bill that would have allowed Hong Kong residents to be sent to the mainland to stand trial.

Resident-led group Parents United of Hong Kong also issued an online statement calling the police's actions on August 11 "cold-blooded violence".

It has struggled to find middle ground after one of its pilots was arrested for rioting over his alleged participation in a Hong Kong protest.
