Jamie Chadwick: "best year of my career so far"

WSeries

The 21-year-old did just what was required at her home circuit to go down in history as the victor of the first ever all-women's championship, earning £410,000 in prize money in the process.

"The whole W Series experience has been incredible", added Chadwick.

The payday, more than the annual wages of some current grand prix drivers, and the publicity could boost her hopes of eventually becoming the first woman since 1976 (Italian Lella Lombardi) to race in Formula One.

But she was under constant pressure from compatriot and eventual race-winner Alice Powell and Finland's Emma Kimilainen, who passed her on successive corners. Visser managed to take third place, making Brands the only race where Chadwick didn't record a podium finish. For Chadwick, though, this is just a step towards her ultimate goal. "I had a tough middle of the season, but to bounce back to be second in Assen and first here at Brands Hatch in front of my home crowd has been incredible - it's been a truly wonderful day".

Chadwick, who is a development driver for Williams, became the first woman to win a Formula Three race a year ago and continues to chase a spot in Formula One.

"I was relatively unknown coming into the season and now I think the leg up it has given me has been huge". I think that might have caught Emma out and thus enabled me to take the win - which is just unbelievable. Next year will also see drivers eligible to score FIA Super Licence points, which are vital in order to become a Formula One driver.

"It'll sink in soon I'm sure, but it hasn't yet", Chadwick said after the race. Jamie did really well to try and fight me around the outside but I managed to muscle it out and take the lead at Druids.

"I want to do as much as I can.my overall aspirations are much greater than just this, than the W Series", she said.

The overall runner-up will get $250,000, with $125,000 for third place and prize money through the field.

W Series Chief Executive Catherine Bond Muir has promised extra European rounds for 2020, with the series looking to expand further across the globe in the following years.
