McIlroy one shot off the lead at the Tour Championship

Brooks Koepka birdied three of the last four holes to join Thomas and Schauffele on 10 under

Adam Scott leads the Australian contingent and is five under for the week having mixed a birdie with a bogey in his first seven holes on Saturday.

McIlroy and Koepka start one back, and 2017 Tour Championship victor Xander Schauffele is one behind them.

The Australian is at five-under overall, five shots from the lead held by world No. 1 Brooks Koepka and fellow-Americans Justin Thomas and Xander Schauffele at 10-under.

Thomas made an encouraging start when he rattled in a 25-footer for birdie at the second, but he was far from matching the imperious long-game that swept him to a three-shot win on 25-under par at last week's BMW Championship.

Three players - Hideki Matsuyama, Jon Rahm and Chev Reavie - are tied for sixth place, nine adrift of Koepka on six under.

McIlroy took better advantage of the 90-minute delay, firing his first birdie at the 12th before finishing his round with a 15-foot birdie putt on the 17th and a closing birdie on the 18th.

'Being three or four behind those guys for the most part of the day and then to catch JT (Justin Thomas) and only be one back of Brooks, it was nice to finish the way I did'. He also birdied the 7th and 13th holes and shot a bogey on the 11th for a 2-under on the round.
