Move over 64MP: Samsung unveils 108MP camera sensor destined for Xiaomi phone

Xiaomi's Global Vice President and Xiaomi India Head, Manu Kumar Jain took Twitter to announce the news that after the 64MP camera phone, Xiaomi will bring the 100MP camera phone that'll have the sensor with 108000000 pixels and 12032×9024 resolution. It's also significantly larger than the 1/1.7-inch 40MP sensor in Huawei's P30 Pro, which is one of the biggest phone sensors to date.

The sensor is claimed to produce enhanced images even in extreme lighting conditions.

This is the 108MP (108000000 pixels) CIS customized by Samsung Semiconductor for Xiaomi. However, we can not confirm that the Redmi Note 8 will feature 64-megapixel camera tech.

Xiaomi is reportedly working on a new smartphone with a brand new 108MP ISOCELL CMOS image sensor from Samsung.

There is Dual Conversion Gain (DCG) as well that converts the received light into an electric signal according to the illumination of the environment. However the company didn't clarify whether this 100MP smartphone will have Samsung ISOCELL sensors. The mechanism uses a high ISO in darker settings that helps reduce noise, resulting in clearer pictures. This includes a 108-megapixel maximum resolution for photos, and 6K (6,016x3,384 pixel) video recording at 30 frames-per-second. The race of "Excellent Camera with good smartphone feature" is on now. The announcement came just after the showcasing of 64MP camera smartphone.

The briefing today is an apparent move to steal the thunder from its rival Oppo, which is set to launch its first smartphone with a 64-megapixel camera tomorrow. The Chinese smartphone maker's presence in India is dominating and it grows with every new product and innovation. Whether we need 100MPs is a whole other story, but it's still good to see that Xiaomi are taking their cameras seriously.
