NFL and Jay-Z Team Up for Live Music, Social Activism

JAY-Z’s Roc Nation to Announce Partnership with NFL

The NFL is poised to announce a sweeping business partnership with Jay-Z's Roc Nation, sources tell Front Office Sports. Black entertainers including JAY-Z and Rihanna have turned down the gig in the past in support of Kaepernick.

In a boost to the NFL's efforts around social justice, Roc Nation, the entertainment company founded by iconic rapper, businessman and activist Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter, has agreed to lead the league's endeavors in music and entertainment.

The move also comes after yearly protests against the NFL for condemning players kneeling during the national anthem to protest police brutality.

However, the National Football League commissioner, Roger Goodell, made it clear that Jay-Z doesn't have plans to perform, at least not anytime soon, during the halftime show. "Roc Nation has shown that entertainment and enacting change are not mutually exclusive ideas - instead, we unify them".

Jay-Z will co-produce the Super Bowl halftime show, but will not necessarily perform according to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. Roc Nation will also become involved with the league's activism campaign, Inspire Change. He joined Kaepernick in a collusion lawsuit against the league. Those demonstrations were sparked by former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick kneeling during the national anthem in 2016.

For years, Jay-Z was critical of the NFL's handling of peaceful protests from various players like Colin Kaepernick, who made a decision to kneel during the national anthem to bring attention to various forms of police brutality.

Roc Nation declined to comment on the partnership but is expected to address the media on Wednesday.

Roc Nation will advise on the selection of artists for events such as the Super Bowl.

"He was very quick to say that he does not want this to be about him performing, that it was broader than that", Goodell told The Washington Post.
