Norwegian to end transatlantic flights between Ireland and North America

"However, as the return to service date for the 737 MAX remains uncertain, this solution is unsustainable", senior vice president for the airline of commercial long-haul and new markets, Matthew Robert Wood, said in a statement.

Norwegian pulled its Shannon flights in the aftermath of the grounding of the MAX Aircraft, a move which represented a significant blow to the Airport and the region.

Following two airplane crashes within months in Indonesia and Ethiopia caused by software problems of the 737 Max 8's emergency system leaving 346 people killed, all aircraft of this type were banned from flying by countries around the world.

Norwegian launched flights from Ireland to North America in 2017, three years after introducing the UK's first low-priced, long haul flights to the United States.

Mr Dickson's swearing-in ceremony follows a damning report from the New York Times last weekend revealing the extent that U.S. deregulation had led to overlooking faults found within the 737 MAX's Manoeuvring Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS) software, eventually causing the two fatal crashes.

The decision will ultimately end all flights from Stewart, New York; Providence, R.I., and Hamilton, Ontario, and Dublin.

Loss of capacity as a result of the groundings has forced airlines to cancel thousands of flights and lease replacement aircraft to cover deficits.

The fallout from the Boeing 737 Max issues continues - Norwegian ceases global operations in multiple USA locations.

The carrier had been running six routes from Dublin, Cork and Shannon to the United States and Canada.

The airline also says its engaging with its 48 pilots and 86 cabin crew in Dublin to ensure that redundancies remain a last resort.

Its performance was weighed down by 144 million euros in costs resulting from the grounding of the 737 MAX trouble after two fatal crashes.

At least 80 administrative staff for Norwegian airlines based in Ireland will not be affected by the route closures.

US President Donald Trump's pick for leading the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) will be tasked with boosting the government body's reputation after facing intense scrutiny from Congress, who are demanding stricter oversight into Boeing's progress in fixing defects with its flagship plane.
