Owner: 3 Dogs Died Within Hours of Contact with Blue Algae

The dangers of dogs swimming in ponds during hot summer months

Last week, three dogs in North Carolina died just hours after swimming in a body of water filled with toxic blue-green algae. About 30 minutes after leaving the lake, Arya started making "weird" noises and vomiting in the vehicle, pet parent Morgan Fleming wrote on Facebook, as per 11Alive.

Martin told the news outlet that her dogs were exposed to the bacteria-ridden algae during their swim.

"Some types of blue-green algae produce toxins during blooms and when these blooms decay, the toxins may be released into the water, posing a risk to people and pets", said a news release from the municipality.

Blue-green algae - cyanobacteria to the scientific community - are a massive, diverse, and ancient group of bacterial species ubiquitous in nature.

The DNR says blue-green algae create a variety of deadly toxins.

"What started out as a fun night for them has ended in the biggest loss of our lives", Martin wrote in a Facebook post that has since been shared more than 15,000 times. 'We need your prayers.

On top of that, it can be hard to detect where algae blooms have formed.

"Prompt treatment is important in all cases of poisoning, but since blue-green algae attacks so fast, speedy intervention is critical".

"Your typical lay person will not be able to tell one algae from another, or a good from a bad", Aubel told the outlet.

If your pet comes into contact with toxic algae, the CDC recommends rinsing them with tap water as soon as possible and consulting a veterinarian.

About 30 minutes later, while driving home, Morgan Fleming said: "We noticed her making weird noises and she threw up and pooped in the auto".

Hopefully municipalities will act quickly and hang warning signs around any potentially contaminated bodies of water - but in the meantime, keep your dogs away from any body of water that you think may have algae.

Symptoms your pet may have ingested contaminated water usually arise anywhere from 15 minutes to several days after exposure include diarrhea or vomiting, weakness or staggering, drooling, difficulty breathing and convulsions or seizures, the Environmental Protection Agency reports.

Martin has since started a GoFundMe to spread awareness about the harmful effects of blue-green algae and how to spot it to prevent more needless dog deaths.
