Pensioner spends a week with dentures stuck in throat after surgery mishap

Man’s missing dentures found stuck in throat 8 days after surgery

But because of the denture debacle, he suffered pain, bleeding and swallowing difficulties, and endured repeated hospital visits, additional invasive tests and blood transfusions.

He couldn't even swallow the medication he was discharged with and had to sleep upright on the sofa as he found it hard to breathe when lying down. The new case report highlights the fact that doctors should be cautious to note any prosthetics a patient who is going into surgery has.

The patient was immediately taken to the operating room, and his dentures were removed from his voice box.

Following the removal, the man returned for a check-up six weeks later, where they found no problems from the denture-ordeal.

In the British case, after the dentures were removed, the man had several bouts of bleeding that required more surgery before he recovered. Loose teeth could be knocked down the throat when tubes are put into the airway. It was wedged against the man's epiglottis, a flap in the throat that keeps food from entering the windpipe and lungs, and had caused irritation and swelling. The man had his dentures, made up of a metal roof and three false teeth, stuck on top of his throat, the study said.

It was the man's dentures.

The man's recovery, however, wasn't quite as simple.

The source of the bleeding was eventually discovered to be "a spurting arterial vessel" in the man's throat that had been obscured by tissue that formed over it during the healing process, according to the report. Emergency surgery was ordered.

The report's authors urged other medical professionals to be wary if a person wears dentures before they undergo general anesthesia. A 15-year review of more than 80 denture-swallowing cases found that 14 percent were found in the larynx and 7 percent were aspirated during general anesthesia. Once, a patient inhaled dentures and ended up dying, the report says. He later passed the false teeth through his digestive system, the article said.

"The case was subject to a full Trust investigation, as we take the learning from any incident extremely seriously to ensure we continuously improve our services to patients".

While the chest X-ray and bloodwork indicated a respiratory infection, the tests "acted as a distraction", she wrote.

Dr. Rui Amaral Mendes, an associate editor for the BMJ, told NBC that patients should always tell their physicians about any mouth problems they may have.
