Serena hopeful over back injury after Rogers Cup retirement

But the six-times U.S. Open champion, still without a title since returning from maternity leave in 2018, now faces her latest injury setback with the year's final Grand Slam just two weeks away.

Now Andreescu is poised to not only enter the US Open as a seeded player later this month, but she's also a threat to become the first Canadian to ever win a Grand Slam singles title.

The 74-year-old grew up in west Windsor and in 1969 became the last Canadian female tennis player until Sunday to win what was then called the Canadian Open and later became the Rogers Cup.

"I just knew", said Williams, adding she´d undergone hours of treatment before the match to combat the back spasms she´d first felt in a semi-final win on Saturday night. You are truly a champion.

For Andreescu, who is competing for the first time since withdrawing from the French Open with a shoulder injury, the win was her first two-set victory all week after having spent more time on court than any other player. It's a dream come true. She has a 38-5 record this season, including titles at Newport Beach and Indian Wells, and Sunday's win was her 17th straight in matches that have been completed. "I tried but I just couldn't do it", an emotional Williams was quoted as saying by wwos.

Williams was hoping that the back spasms would subside and allow her to play the match.

Serena Williams, left, is consoled by Bianca Andreescu after retiring from Sunday's Rogers Cup final.

After her tearful on-court exchange with Williams, and the trophy presentation, Andreescu did a long list of interviews. The American thanked the young Canadian for the kind gesture and praised her attitude.

Williams' retirement was the last of several high-profile injuries at this year's Rogers Cup.

"That's a little frustrating for me because I know that I can play, I just can't play today".

WNBA: Liz Cambage scored 10 of her 21 points in the fourth quarter and finished with 12 rebounds to help the Las Vegas Aces beat the visiting Connecticut Sun 89-81. "I've had many, many tough matches".

"For sure there's some pressure, but I have nothing to lose, really", said Andreescu. I keep getting assured there's nothing extensively serious about the back in that sense. I haven't played many matches in the past 18 months, really.
