Serena pulls out of Cincinnati due to back injury

Ranking jumps: Serena returns to the Top 8

While she remains grounded in her work ethic and her ability to come back from injury, her victory at the Rogers Cup has given her a boost ahead of the U.S. Open.

Serena Williams withdrew from the Cincinnati Masters on Tuesday (Aug 13) due to back problems just days after spasms forced her to retire from the Rogers Cup final in Toronto. She has been on the court more than any other player at this year's Rogers Cup at 10 hours 54 minutes.

"This has definitely got my confidence level up there", Andreescu said of what her Toronto performance means to the rest of the summer hardcourt swing.

"I'm sorry I couldn't do it today", Williams told the crowd, her voice cracking.

"For sure there's some pressure, but I have nothing to lose, really", said Andreescu. Andreescu has been plagued with injury over the past year.

Serena Williams' back is "still not right", leading to her withdrawal from the Western & Southern Open.

Current and former players are praising teenager Bianca Andreescu of Canada - not only for winning her third title of the year and first on home soil, but for the gracious way she handled a surprise retirement by Serena Williams. Still, the Frenchman has come a long way from being outside of the Top 40 just previous year.

"I knew what to say because I've been through that. It's been a tough year, but we'll keep going".

"I don't play in those kind of conditions, so it's not like I can practise", said Kenin. "But I have very big dreams and I don't settle for anything less than what I want". "I tried to just block it out and do the best I can".

Serena, nearly 39 years old, mentioned in a statement that she stood poised to play and hope was still looming on Tuesday morning, but she finally disillusioned as her back remained not right.

"What I've been through the past two months has not been easy", Andreescu said. I know how it is to pull out of tournaments.
