The Little Mermaid Harry Styles Casting News Was Premature

It all started when the Twitter accounts of two movie theatre chains - AMC Theatres and Regal Cinemas - tweeted that Styles had been cast, with both accounts subsequently deleting their tweets (per Business Insider's Jason Guerrasio).

Earlier this month, the singer was reported to be in negotiations to play the role, but a source told Variety that the One Direction singer has "amicably" made a decision to turn down the part.

The popular Disney film's live action remake has been a topic of discussion recently, after Halle Bailey was cast as Ariel and she was subject to some unjust backlash, and Harry was a sure victor to be cast opposite the young actress. An insider with knowledge of the matter revealed that "Styles is a fan of the project but respectfully declined".

Some of The Little Mermaid's rumoured cast include Javier Bardem as Ariel's father, King Triton, and Melissa McCarthy, Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina as Ursula, Flounder and Scuttle.

The entertainment giant has already announced singer Halle Bailey has been cast as Ariel in the film, which is set to be directed by Rob Marshall and is scheduled to go into production in early 2020. The upcoming film will incorporate original songs from the 1989 animated classic, as well as new tunes from original composer Alan Menken with lyrics by "Hamilton" creator Lin-Manuel Miranda.

The original "The Little Mermaid" was a hit when it debuted 30 years ago and was credited with sparking a Disney animation renaissance.

This wouldn't be Harry's first film appearance after he was praised for his role in the 2017 film, Dunkirk. Styles was also recently in consideration for the lead in Baz Luhrmann's Elvis biopic; he lost the role to The Carrie Diaries' Austin Butler.

U.S. actor Austin Butler got the part.
