Vehicle drives into protesters outside U.S. detention centre

Rhode Island man drives pick-up truck into crowd of anti-ICE demonstrators

Frieden said two protesters were injured by Woodworth, including one who suffered a broken leg, internal bleeding and a possible back fracture.

In a video released by Never Again Action of the incident, a black pickup truck can be seen driving into protesters blocking the entrance to a parking lot of the facility.

Organizers claimed the man driving the truck was a detention center employee, and that other detention center employees pepper sprayed demonstrators shortly afterward to clear the way for the vehicle to enter the Wyatt grounds. What happened with Heather Heyer is a tragedy that this country needs to reckon with, and I would be lying if I said I wasn't scared that we would have a similar incident on our hands last night. "I was surprised by how bad but also how normalized it was", Caplan, who's been arrested in protests twice before, told The Daily Beast. "His rank and name were embroidered on his shirt and he was wearing a badge at the time". Never Again Action posted a video of arrestees in handcuffs on its Facebook page.

Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha said Thursday that his office was investigating the incident. "Wyatt supports the First Amendment rights of citizens to peacefully protest on public property surrounding the facility".

"Oh my God, we have a truck that just ran over protesters", a bystanders said on the video.

Lex Rofeberg, a demonstrator who is studying to be a rabbi in the Jewish Renewal Movement, said protesters were singing and chanting when a truck pulled up at about 9:45 p.m.

The truck continues rolling forward slowly as protesters scramble to get out of its way, until it reaches the lowered arm of the parking lot gate a few feet ahead.

Five people were injured - two struck by the truck and three hit with pepper spray. The extent of their injuries are now unknown.

President Trump's immigration policies are immoral, and these Rhode Islanders were exercising their constitutional right to protest.

"This is why we're here", said Aaron Regunberg, a former Rhode Island state representative who participated in the protest, in a media advisory.

Regunberg alleges local police refused to take witness statements on the scene, despite protesters "clamoring, asking, demanding", to give them. "The police did not do anything". They hung an enormous banner over the entry ramp to ICE headquarters that read, "Pelosi, Never Again Is Now". As Jews, our families taught us the lessons of the Holocaust, and we promised that we would speak out and act if we ever saw a group of people being targeted, dehumanized, and rounded up. #NeverAgainMeans doing what it takes to #ShutDownICE.

Despite the injuries her group faced, Anthony said Never Again Action is not deterred.

"Some of us were harmed tonight, but there are people ICE has detained that are harmed everyday".

A message was left seeking comment from Wyatt officials. "ICE personnel were not involved in the protest response that occurred Wednesday night", the spokesperson said, adding that ICE detainees are housed at the facility "through an intergovernmental service agreement with that city corporation". This month, we're returning to the Wyatt detention center around the Jewish holiday of Tisha B'av which commemorates the destruction of the Temple. Although the facility has a contract with ICE, the officers and guards are not ICE employees.
