'We're still here': Hong Kong protesters return to streets

They have dominated a peaceful sit-in at the city's global airport which entered its third day on Sunday, with about a thousand demonstrators singing songs and handing out flyers to arriving travellers amid a carnival atmosphere.

Scores of protesters were arrested, sometimes after being beaten with batons and bloodied by police.

"Hong Kong's radical demonstrators have repeatedly used extremely risky tools to attack police officers, which already constitutes a serious violent crime, and also shows the first signs of terrorism emerging", said Yang Guang, spokesman for the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council.

Over the weekend police fired tear gas into subway stations.

"Affairs of Hong Kong brook no foreign interference".

Moreover, the protests themselves have involved a significant proportion of the Hong Kong population and have taken place largely outside of the involvement of the official opposition in the city-the so-called pan-democrat grouping in the Legislative Council.

Those methods were on clear display in the PLA garrison drill and another video distributed last week showing thousands of Chinese riot police conducting a similar exercise in Shenzhen, on the border with Hong Kong.

The Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong - the city's largest political party - said in a statement that the actions are necessary to ensure passengers' safety.

This weekend's round of pro-democracy rallies marks the tenth straight weekend for the demonstrations.

Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd shares headed for a decade low in Hong Kong trading after Chinese authorities hit out at the airline because its employees joined anti-Beijing protests.

At the airport, protesters held signs reading "Hong Kong is not safe" and "Shame on police".

"The United Kingdom has no sovereignty, jurisdiction, or right of supervision over Hong Kong".

"The police are continuing to use all sorts of weapons to challenge the bottom line of Hong Kong people with their weapons. All Hong Kong people with a conscience can see this clearly".

Their demands have broadened to include calls for more democracy and for Hong Kong's leader Carrie Lam to resign.

On Friday, China's Civil Aviation Administration said it will ban Cathay Pacific staff from supporting or participating in "illegal demonstrations, protests and violent attacks, as well as those who have had radical behaviours" from working on flights. "For us, it's like, 'Live free or die.' We don't want to live in a world like China now".

The Chinese authority ordered Cathay to submit information about all crew members flying to the mainland for verification and authorisation starting Sunday.

It also terminated two airport ground staff for "misconduct".

Hong Kong police put on a demonstration of an anti-riot water cannon on Monday, in a warning to protesters as authorities toughen their approach over violence that has roiled the Asian financial hub for two months.

"It's a mistake that the British government called Hong Kong Chief Executive directly to exert pressure", she said.
