A modified Bugatti Chiron hits speeds in excess of 300mph

Bugatti Chiron breaks the 300 MPH barrier (Video)

With British test driver Andy Wallace behind the wheel, the upgraded Chiron hit 304.773mph at the Ehra-Lessien test track in Germany on August 2.

The company says its 300mph run spells the end of its obsession with top speed, having "shown several times that we build the fastest cars in the world". One other change is the adoption of a laser-controlled ride height to make the automatically adjustable suspension reduce the amount of drag furthermore. Bugatti also ditched the airbrake and streamlined the rear deck to improve aerodynamic efficiency, redesigning the exhaust system and diffuser in the process. But a limited-edition Bugatti Centodieci unveiled in August is priced from €8m ($13m) plus taxes which would push it to $20 million in Australia, suggesting the new auto will command a hefty fee.

Top Gear can exclusively reveal that Bugatti has smashed through the 300mph barrier.

Much like the aforementioned Centodieci, the quad-turbo 8.0-litre engine delivers an astounding 1,577 bhp and is the same powertrain installed in the revival of the EB110. It might not hold it for long, as the Chiron's top speed is nearly 10% faster, but don't count the Swedes out just yet either.

The standard Bugatti Chiron is limited, using on-board electronics, to a top speed of 261 miles an hour.

Additionally unchanged is the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox and four-wheel drive system. We're overjoyed to be the first manufacturer ever to have achieved a speed of more than 300mph.

"The biggest challenge is to get the overall package right - not only design, not only aerodynamics, not only engine, not only tires", Bugatti's Frank Heyl told Top Gear. There's a full roll cage and a safety seat for the driver, and any number of visible and invisible weight-saving measures have been deployed. With this new record of the Chiron we enter again uncharted territory.

But Bugatti chief executive Stephan Winkelmann says there is more to the Chiron than its speed.

Official photos confirm the record-breaking vehicle is based on the Chiron, but it wears a modified body with a longer rear end that allows it to keep its four wheels on the ground even as it crests the 300-mph mark.
