Apple Watch Series 5 launches with always-on display

Frank Gillett, principal analyst at Forrester, told CNN Business that the Series 5 "improvements were very compelling for new and upgrade buyers, especially the always-on display and the expanding range of health monitoring features". There haven't been many rumors about the new Apple Watch, so it was unclear whether we will actually see a new Apple Watch this year. The titanium case will start at $799, while ceramic will start at $1,299. Now automatic emergency calling is worldwide, so you can quickly contact emergency services in a number of countries. The Apple Watch now holds the title of the best-selling smartwatch, and the Apple Watch 4 is the company's most elegant device yet (sitting near the top of our best smartwatch ranking).

The Apple Watch has become a sleeper hit, capturing the lion's share of the small but increasingly important smartwatch market nearly immediately on launch in 2015. For now, Apple has not detailed a release date for India.

Series 5 dives even further into Apple's focus on health and has added features for navigation, including a built-in compass.

Like the one before it, Series 5 will come with a Global Positioning System only option starting at $399 and Global Positioning System + cellular for United States customers, starting at $499.

The Apple Watch Series 3 will remain on sale, with a price drop to $199/£199. The Apple Watch Series 5 can be ordered today and will be in stores on September 20.

The classic gold, silver and space gray aluminum finishes Apple has used for past watches will also be available. Both are 10.7mm thick, and feature a digital crown with haptic feedback. Combine that with a new, more sensitive ambient light sensor and Apple's 'software power management, and there you have it.

It will be driven by the A10 Fusion chip and has a smart connector to allow a full size keyboard to be connected. There is 32GB of storage on the smartwatch.

Additionally, the new low-temperature polysilicone and oxide (LTPO) display is capable of operating between one and 60 Hz. The company is also touting a peak brightness of 1000 nits. If you haven't worn an Apple Watch before, it's easy to dismiss the Series 4 as being identical to its predecessor, save for the larger screen.

The Apple Watch Series 5 also features a new always-on Retina display, a built-in compass and, on models with cellular service, the ability to place global calls to emergency services.

Series 5 models will cost $649 for Global Positioning System only, and $799 for LTE. There are also Hermes models, with Space Black stainless steel cases and noir leather bands.

The new iPhones aren't the only things Apple is launching today.
